I want to be completely transparent here. Beatnik83 is my home. A gateway in making my dreams come true. I want to share my work to as many people as possible. The best way to promote my work is through advertising. I’ve been using free methods for years. Recently, I moved towards paid advertising. I do have some experience with internet marketing. I’ve studied internet marketing for 4 years yet I haven’t applied many of the techniques towards my artwork. I want to share everything here. I will share free and paid techniques to help advertise your work. Throughout time, I will learn more and hopefully master certain techniques and methods. I hope you find my journey helpful in promoting your artwork. You don’t have to be an artist to follow this guide. You can apply these techniques to promoting your website, in any niche.
∗Small Disclaimer: Every word written in this post is my opinion. If you disagree with any of my methods that’s fine. Nothing stated here are rules that you must follow. This is a journey to master internet marketing to help promote my art. Techniques may fail or succeed. This is all an experiment for me. I am learning every day. It’s up to you to continue reading or use any method. I take no responsibility in the choices you make.∗[line]
First, I must say that it is best to stick with one method in advertising your work. Master one method and then move on to other sources. My method will be Google. I promote my art through Google Plus (Free) and Google Adwords (Paid). I do have a twitter, facebook, and pinterest account. I post my work on these sites but I haven’t dedicated a lot of time into marketing my work. From what I read and observed from others in marketing, I feel it’s best to concentrate in one area.
Art Marketing – Paid Advertising with Youtube Videos
In this part, I wanted to share how I promoted my first art album. Currently, I have over 100 videos at my youtube channel. I am dedicated to building my channel. I feel video marketing is an effective tool to help promote your art. I have experience with Sony Vegas 12. I created an art album that’s very similar to a slideshow but with effects that were timed to beats of a song I used.
The first album was very experimental for me and I learned a lot! In the next album, I will be tweaking several keys aspects of the album to maximize views. I also want to build my exclusive art list. Having a list gives you a chance to share your work to a targeted group of people that are interested in what you have to offer. My focus is to provide exclusive designs, updates with upcoming art, and free portraits. If you’re thinking about building a list, think about what you can offer to your targeted audience that provides some form of value. It can be free art, free videos, discounts, contests, and etc. Right now, I only have 4 subscribers but for the next album, I will focus on building my list.
One thing that’s a critical part of video marketing on Google is the first 30 seconds. With Google adwords, you pay when someone clicks on the link in your video ad or once your ad reaches 30 seconds. This means… you have to present the main goal of your ad in the first 30 seconds. I didn’t do that for first album because I wanted to test how many views and clicks I could get based on the type of video I made.
Art Marketing – Breaking down the video campaign
I ran the campaign for 5 days on Google Adwords for Video. At the end of the campaign, I received a little over 2,400 views on my video. It says 2,303 in adwords but I received 100 extra views. I spent 20 dollars a day. You can see in the screenshot below my stats during the campaign.
I spent 102.88 on this campaign. If you haven’t used Google adwords you can get a coupon here. I was able to get 234 clicks on the ad. I think 234 clicks for 100 dollars is pretty good.
You can go in-depth with targeting on your ads. I focused on interests, topics and keywords. I targeted each section related to art.
Here are the targeting categories:
- Topics (Target people who visit parts of your website)
- Remarketing (Target people who visit parts of your website)
- Keywords (Target content related to your keywords)
- Placements (Target specific videos and websites)
- Interests (Pick available categories to target users interested in these topics, even when they may be visiting pages about other topics)
They also have demographic targeting. I didn’t worry much about this and didn’t change anything. However, if you are targeting a certain age group then you should definitely tweak this area.
You can focus your ad on one or more targeting sections. I tried to do more than three, and I got a warning from Google stating that I may not receive a lot of views because targeting was too narrow.
Paying for clicks is another important factor. You place a bid at the maximum amount you are willing to pay for each click. The first day I set my bid at 10 cents. I think it’s good to bid high if you budget is high and if you’re in competitive niche. Since my budget is very low, I should have started at a much lower bid. The first day I only received a little over 100 views. I knew something was wrong so I changed the bid after the second day to 5 cents. After that change, my views spiked to over 500 views a day. Google does provide a typical bid amount. However, I feel it’s best to go by how much you feel you should bid, based on your budget. This may not be the best advice but all this is just an experiment. It’s always better to be safe rather than sorry. I think 5 cents is safe. It’s not too low or too high.
Location… I targeted my video ad in the following countries: Australia, Canada, United States, and United Kingdom. If you want to focus on targeting in another country that’s fine. Most of the views I received were from the United States and Canada. For the next album, I may concentrate solely in those countries.
Art Marketing – Next Album Tweaks
In my next album, I will focus on two things in the first 30 seconds. Promoting my exclusive art list and introducing the album. The link will go directly to the landing page from my exclusive art album. The clicks in this campaign went back to my channel page. In retrospect, it was a mistake to have the ad go back to my youtube channel but that’s the whole point of this journey. Learn what works and what doesn’t work!
If you don’t know what a landing page looks like, click here. I heard great things about leadpages and will be developing a new landing page dedicated to the album using their services.
In part two of this guide, I will show you how to create youtube videos with Sony Vegas 12 and Movie Maker. You can create a slideshow video with lots of effects. If you don’t have the time to create videos, you can check out Animoto.
If you’re on the fence with paid marketing, do a test with the Google Adwords coupon. I am very happy with the results. I haven’t had anywhere close to 2400 views on any of my videos.
A great website to learn more about marketing is the Warrior Forum. This site is where I started learning internet marketing and I love it. It has tons of information that’s great for anyone getting started.
I hope this part of my marketing journey has been helpful. I will document progress with every art album. I will create the next part sometime this week. Hopefully before Saturday. Thanks for reading! ♥ Katherine
